Highlights from Indigenous Chaplaincy Training

Korus Connect, in partnership with Planet Shakers College, is empowering Aboriginal communities in remote areas like Halls Creek, Western Australia, through culturally responsive chaplaincy training. By equipping local Aboriginal people to serve as school chaplains, these programs build social capital—fostering strong community networks, enhancing cultural identity, and addressing educational disadvantage. Delivered in culturally appropriate ways and within community settings, the training supports inclusion, reduces barriers to participation, and strengthens connections between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians.

Research highlights that such initiatives generate bonding, bridging, and linking social capital—connecting individuals within their communities, across cultural groups, and to institutional systems. The Korus Connect model stands out for its commitment to cultural safety and community leadership, offering a powerful alternative to traditional top-down education models. With early success already evident in Halls Creek, this approach offers a promising path for improving Indigenous education outcomes and wellbeing through respectful, community-led engagement.
