A school chaplain has been providing support for a Year 6 girl over the last few years (let's call her *Chloe). This year, Chloe's speech became disjointed and she seemed a little more jittery and shaky than usual.
The chaplain began to put some more strategic supports in place and Chloe began to open up about her home life, and how lonely and scared she was. Chloe would arrive at school at 8am every morning because she couldn’t wait to get out of her home. Through conversation, the chaplain was able to support Chloe and encourage her to engage in a positive activity using Lego.
From here, the Lego Club took off as the chaplain fundraised for two large Lego sets, and with the help of other Year 6s, they built two tables for the Lego Club. When the chaplain put Chloe in charge; she stepped up and was very organised, and took great joy in leading the Lego club.
At the end of last term Chloe was presented with a citizenship award. Her mother is so appreciative of the transformation in confidence and self-esteem that she sees in her daughter.
This club has become a safe space for other students to feel welcomed and accepted. It provides a creative outlet, away from 'screen time' and allows them to learn team work and to express themselves. Lego Club is a special place and time for Chloe and others at school. What a great example of students and a school chaplain working together!
Lego Club, is just one of many social skill initiatives facilitated by chaplains and enjoyed by all involved. Building confidence and community one brick at a time!
